What Is Going On (The Year of 2006):
This summer Skykomish Historical Society accomplished a key long-term goal by opening our museum. We can now display parts of our ever growing collection of Eastern King County and Skykomish Valley historical items and information. We were able to host a show for local artists during the Skykomish Artrain event in April, before our museum was officially open. It drew a large crowd to our museum space. It was wonderful to see the town bustling with happy people all weekend. We also had a school yearbook and newspaper display at Skykomish School for the June graduation. Our Grand Opening evening on July 14 and the corresponding weekend’s Old Timer’s event in Skykomish drew well over 200 people counting those who attended the opening, visited the museum, and/or our SHS booth at the Old Timer’s picnic at Skykomish Ballpark. We have also featured offsite displays in local businesses which attract many travelers on their way through town as well as local patrons. SHS maintained a booth at the annual August Show-n-Shine car show where we sold car show t-shirts, to support their committee, as well as our historical pictures of old cars at early-day events in Skykomish. We also had a table of books with copies of old photos which were well browsed. The Skykomish Historical Society and Great Northern Railway Historical Society are co-sponsoring a “GN Day in Sky” on September 23. The informal event will be held at the historical society museum from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. The program will consist of short presentations, GN displays by people attending and from the museum collection, access to the extensive GN digital photo collection and an informal swap and trade. We anticipate several past GN employees attending, so time will be available for some plain old “railroading stories” as well. Our annual general meeting will be at the Community Center Sept. 30th at 1 p.m. The next upcoming event will be to help host members and guests of the Iron Goat Trail’s Scenic Trailhead dedication and ribbon cutting ceremony as they are scheduled come to Sky after their October event for a gathering and dinner program. In November and early December we will be planning our schedule of events for 2007. We have received much praise from visitors who say our small museum is one of the best of its kind they have seen! Our visibility with the museum and our outreach program has energized the community in participating and supporting the Society and has led to further donations of historical significance. And of course through it all there is a massive oil-spill clean-up proceeding in town which is worth a visit all by itself. See www.skykomishcleanup.com for a complete update on what all is happening with the clean-up |
